For many Malaysians, a sewing machine is more than just a household item. It can be the start of a side hustle, a source of extra income, or even a pathway to financial independence. That’s the idea behind WCT Threads of Hope Malaysia, a new community initiative designed to help women from low income households turn practical skills into future earning opportunities.

Launched by WCT Holdings Berhad in collaboration with Grace Community Services and Hazel & Nutz, the programme aims to equip 20 women from B40 and vulnerable communities with hands on sewing skills that could help generate sustainable income.

WCT has launched its latest CSR initiative, WCTGives“Threads of Hope”, in collaboration with Grace Community Services and Hazel & Nutz.

Why WCT Threads of Hope Malaysia Matters

In today’s economy, many families are looking for additional ways to stretch their income. Home based businesses, custom tailoring, clothing alterations, and handmade products continue to offer accessible earning opportunities for many Malaysians.

Recognising this potential, WCT developed the programme after learning that many women within the community already possess basic sewing knowledge but lack access to equipment, materials, and professional training.

Rather than providing one off assistance, the initiative focuses on building long term capabilities.

An 11 Week Journey Towards Financial Resilience

The programme consists of:

  • 11 structured sewing lessons
  • Four hour hands on sessions
  • Small group learning for personalised coaching
  • Practical project based training
  • A graduation showcase featuring participants’ completed work

Participants will learn directly from Hazel Loke, who brings experience in fashion design and entrepreneurship.

The goal is simple: help participants develop the confidence and skills needed to potentially transform sewing into a source of income.

More Than Classes, Real Tools For The Future

One of the standout aspects of WCT Threads of Hope Malaysia is its long term impact.

WCT is sponsoring:

  • 10 sewing machines
  • Essential sewing tools
  • Training materials and resources

Even after the programme ends, the sewing machines will remain at the community centre operated by Grace Community Services, ensuring future participants can continue learning and building their skills.

For many community programmes, the challenge is sustainability. This approach helps create a lasting resource that can continue benefiting families long after the first cohort graduates.

Empowering Women Through Skills

According to WCT, the initiative is built on the belief that meaningful change comes from empowering people with practical skills rather than offering short term support.

The programme aligns with WCTGives, the company’s community platform focused on three key pillars:

  • #WeCareTogether
  • #AGreenerTomorrow
  • #EducationForAll

Since its launch in 2022, WCTGives has supported initiatives that aim to improve education access, strengthen communities, and promote environmental sustainability across Malaysia.

A Growing Focus On Skills Based Empowerment In Malaysia

Across Malaysia, there is growing recognition that skills based training can play a major role in improving financial resilience, especially among underserved communities.

Programmes like WCT Threads of Hope Malaysia demonstrate how businesses can contribute beyond donations by creating opportunities for individuals to learn, grow, and potentially generate income on their own terms.

For participants, the value goes beyond sewing. It is about gaining confidence, independence, and the ability to create new possibilities for themselves and their families.

As more organisations look for meaningful ways to support communities, WCT Threads of Hope Malaysia stands out by focusing on practical, income generating skills that can create lasting impact. By providing training, equipment, and ongoing access to resources, the initiative offers a pathway for women from low income communities to strengthen their financial resilience and build a more sustainable future.
